Don, who was the Cub Master of Pack 280c, re-creates the story of how he came up with the idea of racing miniature cars down a track.
It also includes Don's original drawings of the track design, original rules, original car kit, drawings of the original pinewood derby car design, and many more rare pictures and drawings from the first pinewood derby.
The book features the one and only picture of "
The First Racer", Don Murphy's pinewood derby car that he built with his son, Donn, for the first race in 1953.
Don's "First Racer" car is long since gone but two replicas were built by Joe Gargiulo of Pinewood Pro. One replica car, signed by Donn Murphy, is in the
Pinewood Derby Museum in Stratford, CT. The other replica car was given to Donn Murphy for the 60th anniversary of the pinewood derby. That car is in CA.
Also featured in the book is a picture of the only car that exists that raced in the very first race on May 15, 1953 in Manhattan Beach, CA.
