...Or Select a Pre-Weighted or Fully Built Car, Ready to Race
Basic Speed Tips for Beginners
If this is your first race, you need to know a few basic speed tips to have a competitive car...
Weight Your Car!
Gravity takes your car down the track and inertia makes it speed to the finish line. Be sure your car weighs as close to the maximum 5 oz as possible. You can choose from many different Pinewood Derby weights to add to your car.
Prep Your Axles
First, the axles that come in the BSA Cub Scout kit are not axles; they are nails, and crude ones at that! Run your fingers along the shaft of the nail to feel the crimp marks and burrs. These must be removed or they will grind up the plastic in
your wheels, severely slowing your car.
The single most important thing you can do to increase your car speed is to lubricate your axles with graphite. It comes in a tube and is simply squirted on each axle.

Pinewood Derby Wheels Tip
If you have a bad wheel and you don't have time to replace it, raise that wheel so it doesn't touch the track. Since it doesn't touch the track, it won't have any negative affect on your car's speed.
