How to Use NyOil Lubricant

NyOil is a proven, superior, thin film oil lubricant for Pinewood Derby axles

Most Pinewood Derby rules do not allow you to touch your car once it has been checked in.

NyOil II is a great alternative to graphite because it is a synthetic thin film lubricant that will stay on your axles through the entire race. In our track tests, we found NyOil to be equivalent to Krytox, and it is much cheaper!

How to Apply NyOil to Your Pinewood Derby Axles

  1. Apply one drop to your Pinewood Derby axle, about an inch away from the axle head. Hold the axle by the tip and tip the axle to let the oil slide down the shaft towards the axle head.
  2. Insert the axle into your wheel and spin your wheel for about 30 seconds. This coats the inside of the wheel bore with a thin layer of NyOil.
  3. Repeat this process for all four wheels.
  4. Insert your axles into your car. Be sure to use the PRO Axle Guide or the PRO Wheel Spacer to get perfect wheel spacing so your wheels don’t bind and are not too loose.

Helpful Hints

  • The key to applying NyOil II: less is more. You only need one drop on each axle to cover the entire axle.
  • NyOil will not interfere with our graphite-coated wheels because NyOil is on your axles that go through the wheel bore, so the oil does not touch the outside wheel tread or graphite coating.
  • Do not apply NyOil to graphite-coated axles.
  • Do not apply NyOil to the outside tread of your wheel as this will leave residue on the track.
  • Some rules prohibit oil lubes. This rule usually means the race managers don't want oil to drip on their track! You are only applying one drop to each axle so there is no chance of oil dripping onto the track. But if in doubt, you should check with your race managers and obey the rules!
  • After you insert your axles into your car, I always recommend applying a drop of glue at the tip of the axle (away from the wheel). This holds the axle in place so it doesn’t slid out during the race.

Tips & Hints

Before cutting your car, use a straight edge to draw lines down the center lengthwise and widthwise across your car. Then draw your car design template over these straight lines. The template and straight lines help guide your cutting on both sides of the car so everything is square.

Wheels Tip

If you have a bad wheel and you don't have time to replace it, raise that wheel so it doesn't touch the track. Since it doesn't touch the track, it won't have any negative affect on your car's speed.
